Coaching Requirements

If you have individuals you are aware of that would like to Coach or serve as an Assistant Coach (On the Bench) they must have their Respect in Sport and be Coach Hybrid Qualified or Dev 1 Certified.

House Divisions:

If you have individuals you are aware of that would like to Coach or serve as an Assistant Coach (On the Bench) they must have their Respect in Sport and be Coach Hybrid Qualified or Dev 1 Certified.

Please note, if a person took the course in previous years and the Post Task (Where applicable) was not submitted to BC Hockey as required, they are no longer considered to posses Hybrid Certification and, therefore, need to take the course over again.

Rep (Competitive) Divisions:

Dev 1 is required for individuals who would like to Coach or serve as an Assistant Coach (On the Bench).

Specifically, to coach Rep, a person either needs to:

  1. Attend a Dev 1 course within the calendar year the coaching is to occur up to Dec 1. (This is called Dev 1 QUALIFIED) or,
  2. If they have taken the course in previous years, they had to have submitted to BC Hockey (and have graded/passed) their post task by the March 31 following the year they took the course (This is called Dev 1 CERTIFIED).  If the Post task was not submitted, as required, they are no longer considered to posses Dev 1 Qualification or Certification, therefore, need to take the course over again.

BC Hockey allowed a phase in and even occasionally allowed coaches to submit the post task late to get as many coaches on board as possible, as of 2008-09 there is no more looking away from this requirement.

RESPECT IN SPORT PROGRAM
(FORMALLY KNOWN AS “SPEAK OUT”)

The new safety program Respect in Sport (RiS) is now officially open to all BC Hockey members. The program can be accessed on the BC Hockey website on the Clinics page under the Respect in Sport heading.      Respect in Sport   User instructions and a FAQ sheet are also posted on the Clinics webpage to ease the transition for BC Hockey members to this new program.

RiS effectively replaces the SpeakOut! course. Members that already have their SpeakOut! certification are not required to take RiS. Certification through Respect in Sport will be the equivalent to certification received when taking a SpeakOut! course.

RiS is an on-line training course for coaches and sport leaders. It is designed as a tool to assist coaches in identifying and dealing with abuse, neglect, harassment and bullying in sport.

The on-line course curriculum is broken into six (6), 30 minute modules and includes audio/visual presentations, quizzes and printable handouts. Another beneficial feature of the program is that it does not need to be done all at once, it can be completed at your leisure.   For more information about BC Hockey, please visit the BC Hockey website at www.bchockey.net or email info@bchockey.net.
